*1. What is Golden Crayon?
Golden Crayon is a 2D and 3D multiplayer building and exploration game. You can build your own maps, explore public ones, contribute to other players' projects, and compete on challenge maps to earn coins.
Key features:
• A complete set of over 50 building elements, including platforms, walls, doors, gates, passages, lifts, elevators, belts, slants, vanishing platforms, sources, ambiences, travelpoints, zones, tile zones, hazards, health drainers, hook controllers, interactables, and more. Whether you are building a relaxed exploration map or a precise challenge, it's available.
• A full interactable system. Buttons, levers, pressure plates, key triggers, counter triggers, timer triggers, AND and OR logic gates, and sequence triggers can be combined to build complex cause-and-effect chains across your map.
• Challenge maps and a coin economy. Build a challenge map, and let players compete for the best time. Coins earned can be used to buy items in the store.
• 2D and 3D. Any map can run in 2D mode, which collapses navigation to left, right, and vertical movement, useful for platformers and side-scrolling designs. Use 3D for more creative designs and experiences.
• Script keys. Bind up to 24 custom keyboard shortcuts to commands, phrases, or actions for quick access while playing.

**1.1. Requirements
Note: this section may not always reflect the latest state of the game. Please speak up if anything seems out of date.
• A stable internet connection. Golden Crayon is online-only.
• Headphones are not required but strongly recommended for the full spatial audio experience, especially with HRTF enabled.
• At least 3GB of free disk space. The game is always expanding, so the number is slightly higher than what is required.
• At least 2GB of RAM. If you plan to enable sound preloading, more is recommended.

*2. Getting started
Launch gc.exe from the Golden Crayon folder. The game checks for updates automatically on startup. If any are found you will be notified and can choose whether to install them.
The startup logo plays next. Press Enter to skip it, or disable it entirely in the settings.
After the logo you will arrive at the client main menu.

Before looking at the menus, it helps to understand the two navigation styles used throughout the game.

Form-based menus (virtual GUI): These menus contain a mix of control types such as buttons, input fields, checkboxes, sliders, and lists as separate elements. Press Tab and Shift+Tab to move between controls. Within a list, use the Up and Down arrows to change position. Enter activates the focused button or default action. Ctrl+F searches within a list; Ctrl+G jumps to a list item by number.

Linear menus: These are simple arrow-key lists. Up and Down navigate items; Enter selects the highlighted item; Escape closes the menu. First-letter navigation is active by default. Ctrl+F searches and Ctrl+G jumps to an item by index.

The client main menu uses the form-based style by default. The Classic Main Menu option in Interface settings switches it to a linear list if preferred. The same choice exists for the builder. Either way, the controls for both styles are worth remembering since both appear throughout the game.

**2.1. Client main menu
Connect: Sign in and connect to the server.
Setup account: Configure a previously created account on this device.
New account: Register a new account.
Test speakers: Run a quick audio test to confirm your output device is working.
Options: Open the game settings menu.
Exit: Close the game.

The Connect button is disabled until an account has been set up on this device.

**2.2. Game settings
The settings menu uses a tabbed form. A category list on the left selects which panel of options is shown. Tab and Shift+Tab move between controls; arrow keys navigate lists and adjust sliders; Enter confirms. The categories are listed below.

General: Startup behaviour and language preferences.
Sound and audio: Audio device selection, auditory experience customization, and volume controls.
Voice Chat: Proximity voice chat settings. See section 3.9 for a full explanation.
Interface: How you navigate menus and interact with the game's UI.
Gameplay: In-game behaviour and quality-of-life toggles.
Builder: How the builder behaves and presents itself.
Map: How the game handles and reports map data. This also contains the map converter.

**2.3. Account management
The following applies to all of section 2.3 and explains why account operations can fail.
• The account has not been created or has not been set up on this device yet.
• The account is temporarily or permanently banned.
• The username you are trying to register is already taken.
• A connection to the server could not be established.
• Temporary disable mode is active, which restricts logins to developers while issues are being resolved.
• Account creation is not enabled.

***2.3.1. Creating an account
Select New account from the client main menu. You will be prompted for three things.
Username: 3 to 16 characters. This is how other players will see you.
Password: At least 6 characters.
Email: A valid address used for password resets and important notices.
If everything is valid, your account is created and you can sign in immediately.

***2.3.2. Signing into an existing account
Select Setup account from the client main menu and enter your credentials. The game saves them so you will not need to repeat this step on future launches.
Once setup is complete, use Connect to sign in.

*3. Gameplay
After connecting, the server places you on the last map you were on when you logged out, or if your account is new, the main map. A welcome notification appears in your notifications buffer along with the server's message of the day. Any private messages sent to you while you were offline are delivered at this point as well.
If your account has not yet been verified, the verification menu opens immediately. See section 4.2 for details. Verification is required before you can play the game fully.

**3.1. Keystrokes
Movement:
Arrow keys: Move in the corresponding direction. In 2D maps, Up and Down move forward and backward or climb vertically depending on the map's layout.
Page Up / Page Down: Climb up or down. 3D maps only; use Up and Down arrows in 2D.
Hold Control: Run.
A: Toggle auto-walk.
Shift + A: Toggle auto-run.
Space: Jump.
R: Sit or stand.
Q / E: Rotate 45 degrees left or right. If on a 2D map, changes your direction to left or right.
U: Transportation. Hold to pedal a bicycle or paddle a canoe while mounted. Also works with Space.

Grappling hook:
Shift + J: Throw the hook downward. A collision sound means it has latched onto a platform below.
J: Move down the hook line. Reaches the end and collapses automatically.
Shift + K: Throw the hook upward. A collision sound means it has latched onto a platform above.
K: Move up the hook line. Reaches the top and collapses automatically.
If you do not react quickly enough after throwing the hook it will collapse and you will fall.

G plus J, K, L, U, I, O, Apostrophe, P/Delete: Sets camera markers. J and U is minimum X and maximum X, K and I is Minimum Y and Maximum Y, and L and O is Minimum Z and Maximum Z. Apostrophe tells you the settings of the markers, and P or delete clears them. Camera markers allow you to autofill boundary elements in the builder simply by using your camera, without having to remember and type them yourself.
Double Tap G: Toggles camera mode on and off. With camera mode enabled, the game simulates holding down G for you. Disable this in settings if you keep triggering it on accident.
Shift + Arrows: Move the spyer in the corresponding direction. Reports nearby map elements such as platform edges, walls, doors, signs, and travelpoints.

**3.2. Menus
For a refresher on form-based versus linear menu navigation, see the explanation at the start of section 2. The specific menus below follow one style or the other as noted.

***3.2.1. In-game main menu
Accessed by pressing Enter at the main menu area on the main map. Uses a linear menu. It is the hub for finding and entering maps.
Challenge maps: Lists all active challenge maps. Each entry shows the map name, format (2D or 3D), coin reward, authors/contributors, likes, dislikes, and any assigned categories.
Public maps: Lists maps that contributors have marked as public, with the same details shown per entry.
Contributions: Shows only the maps you contribute to, with the same detail format.
Leaderboards: View completion time rankings for challenge maps. Only maps with at least one recorded completion are shown.
Set as main map: Marks the current map as the map you spawn on when you wish to return to the main map. This only works if the map in question has the category of Hangouts / Main, otherwise you will not see this option.
Close: Dismiss the menu.

***3.2.2. Context menu
Opened with Backspace from anywhere in the game. Uses a linear menu.
Leave current map: Return to the main map.
Rules: Read the server rules.
Changes: See the latest server update notes.
Volume mixer: Open the volume mixer.
Settings: Open game settings.
Help: Open the help menu.
Purchase Golden Pass (Non-golden Members Only): Opens a page in your web browser to buy the Golden Pass. For more information, read the description on that page.
Close game: Exit the game.

***3.2.3. Store
The store opens when you press Enter while standing inside a store zone. On the main map, the store zone is on the second floor of the main building.
The store menu has two options: Buy and Sell. Items are listed with their name, price, and how many are in stock.
Press Enter on any item, and a GUI will appear containing a quantity slider, the name of the item being purchased, and Checkout and Cancel buttons. Once you have chosen a quanitty, select Checkout.
On the next screen, you will be given a sort of purchase summary dialog. This contains the quantity you chose, regular price, the total price of the quantity you chose (regular price if you chose 1) and the Purchase and cancel buttons.
When you click Purchase, the purchase will be completed.
The selling process works just the same way, with the exception of the quantity slider using the amount that exists in your inventory. Items sell for half their original price, which means if you want the money back for an item that was 5000 coins, you would have to sell 2 of that item (2500 + 2500) to get those 5000 coins back.
Purchased items go into your inventory, accessible with Tab and Shift + Tab.
Map builders can place store zones on their own maps using the Store element in the Server tab of the builder.

***3.2.4. Builder menu
The builder menu opens with B and is only available to contributors. It walks you through placing map elements. Map settings are accessible with Ctrl + B, and the Wax Template Builder with Shift B.
The builder defaults to a form-based interface. Each element type presents its own set of fields and browse buttons. Enable Classic Builder in settings to switch to a linear list-based flow instead, however do note that this only applies to the builder menu listing, and not the style of how the form fields appear.

Coordinate system, 3D maps:
X axis: left to right. Left and Right arrows.
Y axis: forward and backward. Up and Down arrows.
Z axis: height. Page Up and Page Down.

Coordinate system, 2D maps:
X axis: left to right. Left and Right arrows.
Y axis: acts as the vertical dimension. Up and Down arrows.
The Z axis is not used in 2D mode, however you are free to use the Page Up and Page down keys to move by height if you wish. Just note that this will move you by Y, not Z.

Common prompts:
Minimum X / Maximum X: left and right boundaries.
Minimum Y / Maximum Y: front and back boundaries.
Minimum Z / Maximum Z: bottom and top boundaries (height).
More information about building can be found in the following files.
interactables.txt: Talks about Golden Crayon's new interactables system. This has nothing to do with the basic one in the BGT version.
legacy_rawdata_glossary.txt (depricated): This is the glossary from the BGT version, detailing map elements in the old spacial syntax. It is not recommended that you use this file as reference, as not all elements are supported in this format.
new_map_syntax_glossary.txt: This is the brand new map syntax Golden Crayon will be using henceforth, and it is recommended you read htis one instead. This one has correct Predictive Syntax support (read more in the file itself).
tile_zone_guide.txt: This is a little introduction to tile zones. People who have played Sketchbook Your World will know these as premium flags.

**3.3. Transportation
Some maps are best navigated with bicycles or canoes, if allowed. Find the bicycle or canoe in your inventory, and use it to get on. then hold U or Space to move. Press Escape to dismount if the Dismiss transportation with the Escape key setting is enabled.
Bikes respond to the surface beneath them with different sounds for surfaces like grass, gravel, concrete, rock, wood, dirt, and more. Certain surfaces such as swamps, deep water, and fire cannot be crossed on a bike.
Canoes are water-based and have their own sound set and behaviour.
Maps can disable transportation entirely using the nobiking or noboating map settings.

**3.4. Zone beacons and locations
Map builders can mark named locations across a map using zone beacons (setting the track feature to yes on a zone). These locations appear in the locations menu, opened with L.
Select a location to start tracking it. Once tracking is active, press Y at any time to hear the direction, distance, and whether it is above or below you relative to your current position. Sonar pings also guide you passively while tracking is active.
Press Shift + Y to stop tracking the beacon.

**3.5. Sonar
Golden Crayon includes a sonar system that provides audio cues about the environment around you. Press O to cycle between sonar modes.
Off: Sonar is silent.
X tiles in front of you: Checks in the last direction you just moved, out to the configured scan distance (see below).
Follows you: As it suggests, follows you, therefore reporting what is under you.
Press Alt + O to cycle the "in front of you" scan distance: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 tiles.
Press Shift + O to cycle the sonar loop speed: off, slow, normal, or fast. While looping is on and sonar is enabled, the active scan automatically repeats at the chosen speed, so it keeps pinging even while you stand still instead of only firing when you move.
Wall sounds from the sonar can be turned off in the Gameplay settings tab if you'd rather not hear them.

**3.6. Challenge maps and coins
Challenge maps are designed to be completed as fast as possible. Finishing one posts your time to the leaderboard for that map and awards coins.
Coins are the in-game currency. They can be spent and earned at the store. New players start with 5000 coins.

**3.7. Script keys
Script keys are programmable keyboard shortcuts. You can assign up to 24 of them to keys 1 through 0 and dash and equals, plus their shifted variants. Configure them in the settings menu under Gameplay.
Script keys reload automatically every few seconds, so changes take effect without restarting the game. Press Ctrl + F12 to reload them manually.
For a detailed overview, refer to script_keys.txt in this folder.

**3.9. Proximity voice chat
Players within range on the same map can hear each other speak in real time. Volume fades with distance and cuts off entirely beyond the proximity range you set in Voice settings. Transmitting requires a Golden Account (see section 4.5); hearing is available to everyone, but is off by default and needs to be turned on with the "Enable voice chat" checkbox in Voice settings.

Once voice chat is enabled, Alt + V cycles your own microphone between three modes: push to talk (hold Semicolon while you speak and release when done), voice activated (hands-free — the microphone opens automatically whenever it picks up sound above the threshold you configure in Voice settings), and muted. Muted stops your own microphone without touching the "Enable voice chat" switch, so you keep hearing everyone else — it's the quickest way to go silent yourself without losing incoming voice chat entirely, which turning "Enable voice chat" off would also do. All three modes can also be picked directly from the Capture Mode list in Voice settings.

If you want to adjust someone's volume without changing the global setting, press Alt + N to open the nearby speakers menu, find the person, and set their volume individually.

If voice chat sounds choppy or cuts in and out, try increasing the jitter buffer in Voice settings. This adds a small delay but smooths out interruptions caused by an unstable connection.

**3.8. Server commands
Open the chat box with Slash, press Slash again, type a command, and press Enter. If you prefer not to type the leading slash, press Apostrophe instead and the game adds it for you.
The full command list is available in-game with /help or Ctrl + H. Commonly used commands are listed below.

*4. Online and server
This section describes how the server works and what features it provides beyond the basics covered in section 3.

**4.1. Account verification
New accounts must be verified before public chat and private messages become available. The verification menu opens automatically on first login. Choose to send a code to the email address on your account, then enter the code you receive.
To open the verification menu manually at any time, type /verify in the chat box.

**4.2. Offline private messages
Private messages sent to a player who is currently offline are queued on the server and delivered the next time that player logs in. You can only have one pending offline message per conversation at a time; the other player must respond before you can send another.

**4.3. Groups
Groups are persistent private chat channels any player can create. Messages sent to a group are only heard by its members regardless of which map they are on.
For a list of commands, see above.

**4.4. Discord integration
The public chat channel, as well as any server-wide notifications, are bridged to Discord channels through the server's bot, Kayla. Messages you send in the global chat appear there, and messages posted in that Discord channel appear in-game. This is a live two-way connection, not a log feed.
This can be disabled if necessary (e.g. spam, game-only discussions, etc).

**4.5. Golden Account
A Golden Account is a one-time supporter upgrade. It does not lock away any core gameplay — everything that makes the game work is free. Golden is for players who want to show their support and get something nice in return.

Current perks:
• A * badge shown next to your name in the online list (Shift + /) and the player tracking menu (T). Visible to everyone.
• Proximity voice chat transmitting. Anyone can turn on voice chat to hear incoming voice, but only Golden members can actually speak. See section 3.9.
• Map snapshots. Every time you make a change to one of your maps, the game automatically saves a snapshot. Up to 10 snapshots are kept per map on a rolling basis. Use /mybackups to see what is available and /restoremap <number> to roll back to one.
• Early access to new features during testing periods before free players.
In order to get a Golden account, you must purchase what is known as the "Golden Crayon Golden Pass".
To access the product page, open the Context Menu with Backspace, and if you are not Golden yet, select the Purchase Golden Pass option. The web page will open in your browser.
Alternatively, visit this page:
https://tunmiverse.gumroad.com/l/golden-crayon
Follow the instructions on the page.
Once you have a key, type /redeem <key> in the chat box to activate it.

*5. Additional documentation
The documentation folder contains several reference files alongside this readme. A lot of it was documented above, but they are being included in this section for a full reference.
interactables.txt: A full explanation of the trigger and action system, including all trigger types and how to wire them together.
new_map_syntax_glossary.txt: A reference for every element type supported by the current map format, with example syntax for each.
legacy_rawdata_glossary.txt: The old space-separated map format, kept for reference when working with older maps.
tile_zone_guide.txt: A detailed explanation of the tile zone system and all the properties it supports.
script_keys.txt: Documentation for the script keys system with more examples and variable references.
licenses_and_credits.txt: Audio library and music credits.
